Crystals

The original questions was:
Many religions around the world such as Hinduism and Buddhism place great trust in crystals and crystal power.  Many modern people in western societies believe crystals can enhance health and well-being.  Do crystals really have real power?

Answer by John Mackay

From Aboriginal to Zen, crystals from beautiful Amethyst to spectacular Zircons, are promoted as aids to spiritual power or peace. Many followers of ancient or modern New Age type religions teach that crystals bestow power on the humans who possess them. But what properties or powers do they really have, given there are upwards of 4,000 known crystalline minerals?

One of our colleagues an American Geologist, was chatting online with “ANON25”, who told how he had a “phantom quartz crystal” on his necklace. ANON was intrigued that our colleague was a university-trained mineralogist yet a Christian. ANON described himself as a healer who used crystals to “focus his own natural ability.” When asked what power he had through crystals ANON replied; “powers of absorption, the ability to form impressions of people’s motives, the power of display, the ability to form holographic images. ANON  commented that crystals could heal and channel (a term used by occult followers to describe communication with spirits/demons) and could also serve as a “lens in certain rituals,” to determine colour, associated with energies or vibrations. As a scientist, our US Associate  was amused at ANON’S  claims for crystals, but why the reference to contacting the spirits – something that pagan cultures have traditionally used crystals for? Is there any Biblical evidence that either power or spirits are associated with crystals?

In Ezekiel 28 we read of God’s judgement on both the Prince of Tyre as well as the one who was the Spirit Cherub who was King over the Prince. The Prince was earthly and physical but the King was the devil who had led the evil Prince in his rebellion against God. In verse 13, we read how the original Angelic Lucifer was once in “Eden, the garden of God”, where every precious stone was his covering, including topaz, emeralds and sapphire … “ The passage goes on to describe this angel’s duties, and amazingly, they revolve around minerals and crystals. In verse 14, this cherub is described as walking “among stones of fire” (KJV).

To myself, also a geologist who has also run a lapidary club, this fits perfectly the picture of the formation of crystals such as sapphire or emerald. We can manufacture these by simply dropping aluminium oxide power through a high temp flame. It appears that the Lucifer, aka that Old Serpent Satan, began his existence around beautiful minerals and this beauty was one avenue of pride which led to his rebellion against God. It is not surprising then, that crystals have also come to be used in the occult as a doorway to Satan and his evil demonic spirits.

Across the board “white witches”, wiccans, Native American, traditional pagan and heathen religions through history, and the followers of the New Age, have all claimed that crystals have power to bring happiness or heal.

Be warned! Satan does have real power, which means there are real spirits in our world and even using a crystal as a talisman, amulet or a magic stone, may open the door to such demons controlling your life. Satan’s aim is always to offer you only a little lie, in order to blind you to a big truth and so hide you from the real Power of God in creation, salvation and judgement.

But do crystals have any real, God-given power? They actually do but more at the physical and medicinal level. Dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate) is used as a chewable antacid tablet. The beautiful Fluorite (Calcium Difluoride) is a source of fluorine which, combined with sodium, in toothpaste, prevents tooth decay by strengthening teeth. Muscovite, a type of transparent mica (potassium aluminosilicate) is a good insulator against heat and electric current. These properties allowed it to be used not only for the first see-through oven doors, but also in early electronics. In the 1940s to the 1960s amateur radio was a big hobby, but different crystals were needed to transmit or receive on different frequencies. Some of you have real “crystal power”, around your wrist in the quartz crystal oscillator in your watch. The quartz (silicon dioxide) has an interesting electrical property: if you put an electric voltage across the crystal it vibrates at a fixed frequency. This property named piezoelectricity, allows very accurate time keeping.

Crystals are also very beautiful, and there is nothing wrong with enjoying their beauty and taking delight in the wonderful light effects we see in them.  In fact, they serve as a reminder to give thanks and praise to the Creator who loves beauty, and has filled the world with colour and light.

Whether in medicine, electronics, and beauty our Creator God has placed wonderful power in crystals, but it is to remind us of His greater power as Sovereign Creator and Lord and coming Judge. As the Apostle Paul reminds us in his letter to the Romans:
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse, because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. (Romans 1:20 KJV)

Such is a sadly accurate description of all who seek crystals instead of Christ.
